What is VITA and the Virginia CASH Campaign?
What is VITA and the Virginia CASH Campaign?
VITA is the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Virginia CASH stands for Creating Assets, Savings and Hope. It’s the VITA program in Virginia and serves low-income individuals and families who qualify for free tax assistance. Volunteers help these neighbors file their taxes properly and obtain all the tax credits to which they are eligible. This free tax assistance program helps our neighbors and communities thrive!
How do I become a volunteer?
Thank you for thinking about volunteering with us! It’s easy to become a volunteer at our free tax assistance site. The first step is to contact Andrea Williams, our Program Coordinator, at [email protected] or 276-706-2523 (work cell). Express your interest in volunteering and then we can help you complete the process.
What hours will I work as a volunteer?
Volunteers can set their own schedules. Different volunteers work at different times, including during the day, in the evening, on weekends, or virtually. It’s important to note that we typically need the most help during the weekend/evening/etc.
What type of work will I do as a volunteer?
That’s up to you! Our free tax assistance sites offer a variety of volunteer roles, including site coordinators, appointment takers and intake coordinators, greeter, screeners, tax preparers, quality reviewers, and more. We also can help if you’re not sure what role would be best for you. Andrea Williams, our Program Coordinator, is happy to talk with you and find the perfect fit.
Do I need any training?
All volunteers complete a basic Standards of Conduct training. Depending on your volunteer role, additional training may be required. Fortunately, all training courses are free, available online or in person, and can be completed in a few hours. The training process is smooth and hassle free.
I’ve never helped someone file taxes before. Can I still help?
Absolutely! Volunteers who assist with filing taxes are trained and certified before they begin their volunteer work. No previous tax experience is needed to volunteer. Plus, we have quality reviewers and managers who support our volunteers. Finally, our free tax assistance sites have a variety of volunteer needs, including roles that don’t directly assist with filing taxes.
Who will I work with?
You’ll have the opportunity to work with other volunteers, our nonprofit agency staff, and members of the community who qualify for free tax assistance.
Who do I contact with questions?
