VITA Volunteer Info

What is VITA?

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is a nationwide program sponsored by the IRS that is available during tax season. Volunteers at VITA sites provide free, basic in-person tax preparation services to hard-working families.

What do volunteers do?

This volunteer opportunity is open to anyone who is interested! Locally across Southwest Virginia, hundreds of people in Southwest Virginia gain access to free in-person filing because of VITA volunteers. We’ll match you up with the VITA site closest to you, and they’ll help you through the entire process of becoming certified and trained through our partnership with the IRS. Even if you do not have prior experience preparing taxes, you’ll quickly get a grasp on how to prepare tax returns and help taxpayers get the tax credits and deductions they’re entitled to. Once you’re trained, you’ll choose your availability and do taxes for individuals at that VITA site.

Each year, community volunteers from across Southwest Virginia help more than 1,800 people receive free tax preparation services.

We need new volunteers for the 2023 tax season!

Group volunteer opportunities are available for corporations, college groups, churches, or civic groups. When you volunteer through our United Way of Southwest Virginia’s VITA sites, you:

  • Learn new skills!
  • Bolster your resume!
  • Acquire tax knowledge!
  • Make friends!
  • Strengthen the community!
  • Help people avoid predatory refund-anticipation loans!
  • Feel good!
